Amid speculation that the currently-suspended IPL might be held within the UAE thanks to the rising COVID-19 cases in India, Dubai Sports City’s Head of Cricket and Events Salman Hanif has said they’re keeping the facilities ready for such an eventuality
The IPL is getting to secure the September-October window, which it’d just grab as there’s immense uncertainty surrounding the fate of the October 18 to November 15 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Speaking to ‘Gulf News’, Hanif said the Dubai Sports City, which incorporates the Dubai International Stadium and therefore the ICC Academy, is prepared as a possible venue for the glitzy T20 league.
“The stadium has nine wickets on the highest just in case an outsized number of matches need to be accommodated within a smaller time-frame. we’ll not be scheduling any matches there to stay the wickets fresh,” said Hanif.
The UAE has recorded quite 50,000 cases and over 300 deaths due to the deadly pandemic that has thrown the planet into disarray. India’s case count, on the opposite hand, has crossed the ten lakh mark, including over 25,000 deaths.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has reiterated on several occasions that he’s keen to make sure that the IPL does happen this year albeit it’s to be taken abroad. The ICC is predicted to require a turn the fate of the T20 World Cup by next week.
If the IPL does get the September-October window for itself, the eight franchises would want their players to land here a touch early to make sure some practice for the players.
The Indian cricketers have confined to mostly their homes since March thanks to a national lockdown and only recently, a number of them have started individual net practice.
“The practice facilities are never getting to be a drag as we’ve hosted multi-team events before. within the ICC complex alone, there are 38 wickets – cover the 2 Oval grounds, the simulated turf wickets also because the state-of-the-art indoor facilities just in case they need to beat the warmth,” Hanif said.
