Coronavirus: Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan tests positive

Amitabh Bachchan, one among India’s best-known film actors, has tested positive for Covid-19, he told his many Twitter followers.

Amitabh Bachchan wrote on Twitter, “I have tested COVID positive, shifted to hospital, hospital informing authorities, family and staff underwent tests, results awaited,”

Abhishek Bachchan, his wife Aishwarya, and daughter Aaradhya have also tested positive.

Bachchan, 77, has starred in 200 films in five decades.

He and Abhishek were taken to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, and his son described them both as having mild symptoms.

Amitabh is currently in the isolation unit of the hospital, news agency ANI reported, quoting a public relations officer for the hospital. He urged anyone who had been close to him in the past 10 days to get tested.

Aishwarya and Aaradhya tested positive on Sunday.

Other members of the Bachchan family have returned negative coronavirus antigen test reports, local media reported.

Mumbai municipal officials have since put up banners outside the actor’s house in the city, classifying it as a “containment zone”.

Bachchan Sir has enjoyed starring roles in hit movies such as Zanjeer and Sholay. Since rising to fame within the 1970s, he has won numerous accolades including four National Film Awards and 15 Filmfare Awards. He was also bestowed by France, its highest civilian award, the Legion of Honour, for his contribution to cinema.

Other than acting, Amitabh had a fast stint in politics and was elected as a member of parliament in 1984 at the behest of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. But he resigned 3 years later, downcast by a corruption scandal under Mr.Gandhi’s government.

He was also a businessman, fixing the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation in 1995 for event management and therefore the production of films. After the venture failed, he went on to host the TV game show Kaun Banega Crorepati – based on the UK game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? – and has starred in more movies since. Amitabh Bachchan’s latest film was the comedy Gulabo Sitabo, released on Amazon Prime.

In recent months, he has been prominent in helping the govt get its message across within the fight against coronavirus.

India has seen a sharp rise within the number of coronavirus cases, with the whole climbing to only about 821,000 on Saturday – the third highest caseload within the planet. There are complaints a few lacks of both testing and frontline medical staff.
